Making Network Digitalisation Clear, Compelling and Investable

SP Energy Networks

Challenge

SP Energy Networks plays a critical role in providing a secure, resilient, and low-carbon electricity system across the UK. As part of the wider Iberdrola Group, SPEN developed an ambitious Network Digitalisation programme to modernise infrastructure, incorporate advanced data and AI, and create a smarter, more responsive grid.

The strategy itself was solid; the technical vision was comprehensive, detailed, and crafted by highly skilled specialists. The challenge lay in accessibility. The programme's complexity made it hard for non-technical stakeholders to grasp its value, sequence, and long-term impact. This caused friction when engaging senior leaders, external partners, and regulators, and made it more difficult to gain alignment, confidence, and ongoing investment.

SPEN needed to turn its complex technical concepts into a clear, credible narrative that would resonate throughout the organisation and withstand regulatory scrutiny.

Solution

Equator served as the strategic bridge between technical expertise and stakeholder understanding. Working closely with SPEN’s Network Digitalisation leadership, we conducted a series of structured workshops and detailed sessions to thoroughly understand the programme, from infrastructure upgrades to the role of data, AI, and intelligent automation in future network operations.

Our role was to simplify without diluting. We translated specialist knowledge into a clear, outward-facing strategy that articulated:

  • The purpose and ambition of Network Digitalisation
  • The tangible benefits to customers, communities and the energy system
  • The long-term value case for investment
  • How the programme aligned with regulatory expectations and sustainability goals

We created a practical, future-oriented narrative and framework that positioned Network Digitalisation as vital to SPEN’s future, rather than just a technical side initiative. This provided leadership with a common language, a clearer roadmap, and a compelling story to communicate both internally and externally.

Results

Our work helped SP Energy Networks move from complexity to clarity, delivering measurable strategic value:

  • Stronger engagement and alignment across ScottishPower stakeholders
  • A clearer, more compelling case for continued investment in digital and technical innovation
  • Demonstrable regulatory compliance and confidence when engaging with Ofgem
  • A structured framework for involving external partners and communities
  • An established platform to support ongoing programme communication and lifecycle engagement

By making Network Digitalisation accessible, SPEN unlocked wider support, sped up decision-making, and strengthened its capacity to lead the transition to a smarter, more resilient energy network.
