Google’s Scottish Digital Garage

Equator Digital Strategist Breda Doherty is excited to be mentoring at Google's first Scottish Digital Garage that runs from September 2016 to January 2017.

The Digital Garage project is part of Google’s commitment to provide digital skills training to 200,000 small businesses, entrepreneurs and students across the UK by the end of 2016 and beyond.

The sixth Digital Garage, the first in Scotland will open in The Mitchell Library Glasgow, on Wednesday, 21st September and is expected run until January next year.

The garage is made up of masterclasses led by industry experts, special events delivered by Google employees and their partner network, and 1-2-1 mentoring sessions by Google Technicians.

I’m excited to be involved in the mentoring aspect of the garage, so if there’s an area of digital you’re curious about or if you want strategic advice on how to grow your business online, you can now book your free mentoring session. Popular mentoring topics at past garages include Google Adwords, Search Engine Optimisation and Social Media.

As someone who is always trying to increase my own knowledge, in many instances through learning from others; I feel it’s important to always share our own insights to help each other develop. This is one of the key reasons I wanted to be involved with the garage.

From previous work with small businesses I also love that you can achieve great outcomes almost instantaneously. For example, in a matter of minutes you can give that company its first online brand presence, through a Google My Business account or Facebook page. You may also find that a small SEO tweak on their website, increases their visibility quite quickly to potential customers.

It’s exciting to think about what we can help local businesses achieve for free, through the mentoring sessions, seminars and general interactions that I’m sure will take place within the garage setting.

The masterclasses confirmed so far include, How to Reach New Customers Online, Know your Business with Google Analytics and How to Tell your Story Online. Like the mentoring sessions, all seminars are free although places are likely to fill up fast. View all upcoming masterclasses.

Alongside this face to face aspect of the project, you can also gain a Google Digital Garage Certification by completing online learning modules.

The Google Digital Garage launches this Wednesday, 21st September from 11am – 3pm and can be found on the ground floor of The Mitchell Library. Following the launch, masterclasses and mentoring sessions will take place –

Monday to Thursday: 9am - 8pm

Friday & Saturday: 9am - 5pm
