Name: Gareth Evans

Position: SEO Team Leader

Time at Equator: 4 years

Clients: Finance, hotel/travel

How would you explain your role as an SEO Team Leader?

I’m responsible for the day-to-day management of the overall SEO strategy and workload across a number of high profile Financial Services and Hotel clients, working with a team of SEO Managers and Executives to ensure we’re delivering the best possible results aligned with client needs and business objectives.

What do you find rewarding about working in SEO?

I enjoy learning and SEO is a great channel to focus on as it’s always changing. With the amount of updates and iterations Google and Bing make to their search capabilities, the field of SEO is always changing so you need to stay on top of your research to stay relevant.

What does 2016 look like in the world of SEO?

More integration on Google. Facebook and Twitter already have some level of integration but I think that’s going to increase over the next year - this will also include all the work they’re doing to better integrate and index apps into their search results.

What are the key skills and attributes required to be a good SEO?

While not a specific SEO skill, the ability to manage your time and prioritise tasks is very important to delivering value to clients. There’s a wide variety of tasks you can be doing to help improve your organic performance - so you need to make a call on the resource you have and what’s going to have the biggest impact. Good Excel skills are very valuable as well as we generally spend a lot of time going through and creating spreadsheets.

What is the best piece of advice you would give someone looking to develop a career in SEO?

There’s a lot of information and misinformation online about SEO so I wouldn’t get too worried about what you know if you’re trying to get into SEO. The right attitude and being able to show a willingness to learn will go a long way for a starting position in SEO.

What is your favourite thing about working with Equator?

The best thing about working for Equator is the people and the clients we get to work with. It offers a huge opportunity to work on some really big campaigns that offer a lot of opportunities to do some really interesting work.
