Is guest blogging on Google’s hit list?
Guest blogging is a contentious topic in SEO because it has become a game of risk management for companies and publishers alike.
Assessing whether gaining a link from a site will be harmful or beneficial in the long run makes a lot a people rightfully nervous. SEOs have the opinion that the value of guest blogging is shrinking in direct relation to the tone of cynicism in Matt Cutt’s voice every time he issues another warning to webmasters about it!
Of course high quality guest blogging isn’t easy to fake these days. Cutts’s latest comments included a list of of basic “do nots” that are in-line with Google’s quality, uniqueness and relevancy messaging. From our perspective, the more attention that’s paid to this topic, the more nervous bloggers and publishers are feeling about entering into legitimate partnerships, even when we maintain a focus on quality over quantity.
What is guest blog abuse?
Of course it’s possible to base your link building strategy exclusively on guest blogging. If you’re sending out automated emails offering to guest post and writing content with the sole intention of gaining a do follow link, then (in Google’s eyes) you’re opening yourself up to penalty.
Similarly if you use the same content on multiple sites, or chop up the same article and post it on different sites, or take a really good post and spin it multiple times… this all qualifies as abuse. Cutts reports: “I would be cautious about using (guest blogging) as a primary link acquisition strategy” and goes on to encourage site owners to be judicious about allowing just anyone to guest post on their websites.
Is the end of guest blogging nigh?
Again, the focus is on hard work, producing quality content, building trust and building relationships – as always, this is not ‘new’ news; keeping these principles in mind for guest blogging is a good starting point to avoid the kind of penalties that Cutts is warning us about here. “What should I be aware of it I’m considering guest blogging?” is worth the watch if you want to find out more.
