Despite the current controversy over user privacy online, Twitter has announced a move to retarget users with browser-based cookies and also using email addresses from businesses' customer databases.

In April, we blogged about Facebook's ventures into retargeting news feed ads and Twitter is following suit with this new tool where users will receive Promoted Tweets tailored to their browsing interests.

Twitter has cleverly covered its back by providing a "Do Not Track" option under settings to fend off advertising sceptics and pave the way for other sites to be more transparent with their privacy settings. Initially it will only be available to US advertisers to test the market. We will be keeping a close eye on this coming to the UK.
