According to the study, blog-related activity ranked higher than Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites when it came to actually influencing purchases, despite receiving significantly less investment from brands.

So should brands be paying more attention to blogger outreach?

Reaching out to bloggers can be a hugely rewarding uplift to your regular social media activity. Common methods of turning bloggers into brand advocates include invites to launch parties, sending our free products to sample or paying for sponsored posts in order to reach their audience. Although blogger activity has proven to be effective, Technorati's report also outlined the fact that only a small portion of the average marketing budget is spent on blogger outreach, despite the majority of influencers being present on blogs.

Bloggers tend to be very vocal with their opinions, offering honest reviews and providing that essential human element when it comes to seeking information about a product or service. Consumers trust and can relate to bloggers, which can consequently influence their purchase decisions.

As with any social activity, a strong strategy needs to be established before diving in head-first. Make sure to choose the right sort of bloggers, avoid generic template-like emails and maintain lasting relationships.
