50% of web sales to occur through social media by 2015

A new infograph by Vocus has revealed that social commerce sales are on track to bring in $30 billion each year by 2015, with half coming from social media.

A new infographic by Cloud marketing software provider Vocus has revealed that social commerce sales are on track to bring in $30 billion each year by 2015, with half coming from social media.

The data reveals that Facebook fans are 79% more likely to purchase from a brand and 20% of shoppers actually prefer to purchase through the social network than the company's webpage.

Intriguingly this infographic comes just as Facebook announced a new list of retail partnerships for their Facebook Gifts service, which allows users to buy and send real gifts to their friends.

While not yet launched in the UK, the service takes advantage of the birthday notifications service, providing an easy method of sending a friend a gift while reminding the user that the event is approaching.

In the US, brands such as Lindt, Pandora and babyGap have already signed up with details of Facebook Gift's performance hotly anticipated in the social network's Q4 earnings.

This is just another way Facebook intends to encourage users to make transactions directly on the platform with businesses already able to open a 'Facebook shop' in their apps.

We expect Facebook Gifts to be a great opportunity when it finally comes over to the UK, especially for those of us with bad memories!
