A hot topic for many affiliate marketers for years now has been that this was the year of mobile commerce. After a strong performance over the Christmas period, mobile commerce really did take off. Retailers experienced a surge in visits from mobiles with traffic increasing by up to 100% between December 24th and 27th.

Using data from one of the affiliate networks, Affiliate Window, one of the most startling headlines that emerged is that the proportion of all sales from mobile device transactions has more than doubled since late 2010, with sales from a mobile device hit more than 2% for the first time in December.

More and more advertisers are launching fully optimised mobile sites in recognition of the growth trend and by offering affiliate tracking through a mobile site, merchants are opening themselves up to a greater affiliate base.

We can expect that through time merchants not developing mobile sites may find affiliates investing their energies promoting competitor retailers who have fully embraced mobile.
